VJOKE

The Pope is super early for his flight. He asks his driver on his way to the airport if he could drive around for a little while because they have time to kill and he hasn’t driven a car since becoming the Pope. Naturally, he’s a bit rusty when suddenly he sees police lights behind him. He pulls over and when the Officer comes up to the window his eyes go wide. He says to the Pope “Hold on for a minute,” and goes back to his car to radio the Chief. Cop: “Chief we have a situation. I’ve pulled over an important figure.” Chief: “How important? A Governor or something like that?” Cop: “No sir. He’s much bigger.” Chief: “So, what? a celebrity or something?” Cop: “More important Sir.” Chief: “A Major Politician?” Cop: “No sir, he’s much, much more important than that.” Chief: “WELL WHO IS IT!?”

Cop: “Well actually I’m not 100% sure. But the Pope is his driver!!!

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes has been through a variety of iterations over it’s long history and became the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1954 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited Royal Randwick. It replaced the AJC Plate (1874 – 1954), which was previously the Queen’s Plate (1851 – 1873). After the sad passing of Prince Phillip last week what a great time to have such a time-honoured race. It was upgraded to $4m in prize money when The Championships began in 2014 but for one year reduced to $2m due to the effects of COVID-19 in 2020, this year in 2021 it is back to the $4m. Distance and conditions varied a lot over the nearly 170-year history of the event. It became the 2000-metre event in 1986 and has remained as such since. The most famous winner Phar Lap won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (then the AJC Plate) in 1930. It was actually one of 18 races he won in 1930, including the VRC St Leger, the Chipping Norton, the AJC St Leger, the Chelmsford, the Hill Stakes, the AJC Spring Stakes, the Craven Plate, the Cox Plate, the Melbourne (Mackinnon) Stakes and the Melbourne Cup. Only five 3yos have won – Tulloch (1958), Prince Grant (1966), Garcon (1967), Gay Icarus (1971), Intergaze (1997). One of his great feats is that Tommy Smith has won this race 11 times while Chris Waller is next best with five. George Moore holds the jockey’s record at six but Damien Oliver is close behind and has five. It has been a race where fairy-tale endings have not always been realised. Gunsynd lost his farewell race, Intergaze held off Octagonal in his last race and Grand Armee did the same to Lonhro. The 2020 Queen Elizabeth Stakes was won by Addeybb from Verry Elleegant, who will win the rematch?
