VJOKE

83 year old Bill was just going to bed when his wife told him that he’d left the light on in the garage, which she could see from the bedroom window. Bill opened the back door to go turn off the light, but then he saw there were three men breaking in to his garage. He called the police and said, “Get over here quickly, there’s three burglars trying to break in to my garage on Maple Drive!” The dispatcher replied, “I see, sir. Is your garage detached from your house?” He said, “Yes, but never mind that these bastards are breaking in and stealing from me!” The police dispatcher said, “All patrols are busy at the moment. You should lock your doors and stay inside. An officer will be along when one is available.” Bill said, “Okay.” He hung up the phone and counted to 30. Then he called the police again. “Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my garage. Well, you don’t have to worry about them anymore, because I just shot them,” and he hung up. Within five minutes, six police cars, a SWAT team, a helicopter, a paramedic and an ambulance showed up at the old man’s residence and caught the burglars red handed. One of the police officers said to Bill, “I thought you said that you’d shot them?!”

Bill replied, “I thought you said there was nobody available!”

Randwick is then showcasing the Group 1 Randwick Guineas and the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes. There are also three Group 2 races and two Group 3 races.

The Group One Newmarket Handicap was first run in 1874 and was the brainchild of the the then VRC Committeeman and Chairman Fred Standish. He has a Group 3 race named in his honour that is run on New Year’s Day. The race is considered Australia’s premier sprint race. He wanted a six furlong (1,200 metres) race to add extra interest to the Melbourne Autumn Carnival. Apart from the Melbourne Cup it is the only other race at Flemington where 24 horses are permitted to race. It has always been run at Flemington except in 2007 where it was run at Caulfield due to the refurbishment works. It is considered Australia’s premier sprint race. The shortest priced winner was Black Caviar in 2011 at 2/11 (for the old-timers) or $1.18. Bart is the most successful trainer with eight victories & Damien Oliver the most for a jockey with three. If anyone ever wanted to see an omen how many people would have backed the winner Century in the 100th running of the race in 1973? Some of the Stars of the Turf to have won the time-honoured race are Wakeful (1901), Heroic (1926), Ajax (1938), Bernborough (1946), Century (1973), Placid Ark (1987), Special (1988), Shaftesbury Avenue (1991), Schillaci (1992), Alinghi (2005), Takeover Target (2006), Miss Andretti (2007), Black Caviar (2011), Hay List (2012) and Bivouac (2020)…
