A group of golfing buddies Randall, Ken (KK), Timmsy and Mark K decided to all pitch in fifty bucks and the one with the best golf score would take their wife out for dinner. The wives loved this idea. Randall thought he was the best golfer in the group but they all really knew Timmsy was clearly the best. KK’s wife Lou-Lou was especially wanting Ken to win and the moment he returned after golfing she excitedly asked, “Are we having a very special dinner tonight Ken?” “Yes we are my dear, how does Peking Duck sound?” Lou-Lou said, “That sounds great.” KK then replied, “Good, while driving over the pond on the 7th hole with the one wood, I accidentally hit one. All we need now is the recipe.”

The race’s name is derived from George Main, a former chairman of the Australian Jockey Club (AJC) and breeder. It was first held in 1945 and was won by Modulation. There was no race held in 2007 due to Equine Influenza. The George Main Stakes was upgraded to Group 1 Status in 1979. Over the race’s history, a number of horses have managed to win this event on more than one occasion since 1946 including Kingston Town (1981-82), Regal Rhythm (1967-68), Count Radiant (1964-65), Shannon (1946-47) and Winx on three occasions (2016, 2017 and 2018). The George Main Stakes has been won by some other classy gallopers including Emancipation (1983), Vo Rogue (1989), Shaftesbury Avenue (1990), Lonrho (2003), Grand Armee (2004), Road To Rock (2009), Stream (2013), Sacred Falls (2014) and Kermadec (2015).
