The ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes had it’s prize money increased in 2014 from $500,000 to $4m to make the WFA Classic the richest race at the Sydney Autumn Carnival. The race is firmly associated with colonial Sydney with the first running in 1851 over a distance of 4,800 metres. It was known as the Queen’s Plate in honour of Queen Victoria and since 1954 it has had its current name after it was changed when Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1954. With the gradual declines in long distance racing the distance of the race went from 3 miles ~ 4,800 metres (1851-1922), 3,600 metres (1923-1953), 2,800 metres (1955-1969), 2,400 metres (1970-1985) and from 1986 onwards it has been 2,000 metres. Some of the notable winners of this time honoured race include: Archer (1862), Carbine (1889-1891), Wakeful (1902), Phar Lap (1930), Peter Pan (1933), Tulloch (1958, 1960-1), Doriemus (1996), Might and Power (1998), Lonhro (2003) and last year’s winner – Winx…..Will Winx win the 2018 edition?
